about

Dr. Manfred Spraul

Dr. Spraul obtained his diploma in chemistry in 1979 at the University of Karlsruhe, during his PHD at the Institute of Petrochemistry he was responsible for the analytical lab  of the institute which used NMR, IR, UV, LC, LC-MS/GC-MS. PHD work  finished in 1982.

In October 1982 he joined Bruker Analytische Messtechnik  as application chemist for NMR and Liquid Chromatography.

In 1984 he took the lead of the German NMR application team. In the following years he led the development of hyphenated systems which were sold worldwide, these included LC-NMR, LC-NMR/MS, LC-SPE-NMR/MS,  UPLC-NMR/MS , SFC- and SFE-NMR. In addition a high throughput flow injection NMR system was developed under his guidance for use in Pharma-, Chemical- and Food-Industry and metabolomics research. In parallel he guided the development of High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning NMR for use in human and animal tissue research and Pharma Industry.  The technology was also applied to food research and still forms a major part of Bruker NMR products.

In 2008 he took the position of business development manager in Applied NMR solutions and led the Applied NMR development team.  In this time he guided the development and execution of fully standardized and automatic NMR solutions for Juice, Wine and Honey Quality and authenticity control. In parallel solutions for the automatic screening of body fluids, namely urine, plasma/serum and cerebrospinal fluid were developed, leading to products for urine and plasma/serum  quantification of small molecules as well as Lipoprotein subclass analysis.  Based on the urine analysis extended to a large number of markers for inborn errors of metabolism a solution could be derived, that allows to create a ranked list of inborn errors based on the markers identified.

In 2015 Dr. Spraul took the position as CTO of Bruker BioSpin`s AIC division, continuing to lead the application development team of 21 coworkers. During this time a NMR solution for Biobanks was developed for QC and information maximization. He and the team then began to develop  NMR-based IVD solutions. In collaboration with  leading Scientists in Australia, Spain and Germany an initially RUO solution for Long COVID (PACS) risks. The product was  released in mid 2022. This solution is the base for IVD-CE developments well under way. Dr. Spraul gained experience in building up spectral databases of pure compounds and complex mixtures as in urine, plasma/serum, CSF, tissues as well as Fruitjuice, wine and honey.  He was responsible for development of the BBIOREFCODE, a spectral base of metabolites in biofluids by Bruker BioSpin, developed under strict standards and storage of each step performed in the preparation of the 1D and 2D spectra. The spectral database fulfills the requirements of pharma industry and also contains drugs and their metabolites.  Over his time at Bruker BIoSpin Dr.Spraul could build a large network of scientists in research and industry, that is able to exchange spectral data on a worldwide basis using the SOPs developed in the Application developmen team.

In 2022, Dr. Spraul founded Sconmet Metabolomics NMR Services, continuing to support research and developments of his customers as well as scientific network building as freelance consultant.
